Careers Education - Room 12

What a great day in Room today!  We have really enjoyed todays learning focus - Careers Education. Over the  next two days we and are working through a series of activities as we consider subject choices for High School, and career options based on our interests and personal qualities.   One of the learning experiences is for each student to visit the website and to independently complete the online survey: http://www.careers.govt.nz/tools/careerquest/questionnaire/#questionId=58 .  This is an  interactive tool which will generate a series of potential career options based on the students answers and preferences.  Tonights follow up task is to complete an two 'Interviews' with parents/whanau to help us with our Inquiry.

National Young Leaders Day

Yesterday, Thursday the 23rd of May 2013, some students from our school went to the National Young Leader’s day held at the Vodafone Events Centre. These students were handpicked by teachers because they believed in their leadership abilities and potential, and think they can be young heroes. Maybe you’ve guessed that this year’s theme was superheroes.

To be a hero you don’t need to be born with superpowers even though that would be cool, you just need to put other people first, risk your life for theirs, take action, and do acts of bravery.

At this event there were some very special guests. Firstly was Dr. Sharad Paul. He told us all about the different types of heroes. He said don’t be afraid to fight a good fight and stand up for your rights. Also that we are candles and we can light up the path for others.

Second was David Accenson, an attitude instructor. He told us about all the different powers. For example; laughter, smarts, kindness and leadership. And that we all have a power.

Thirdly, Erin Simpson from The Erin Simpson show. She was funny and interesting. She told us about her life and her journey starting in The Arts. She told us to; “go with your gut, we all make mistakes, and if you get the opportunity take it.” She finished by saying that we are amazing and that we need to start showcasing New Zealand’s many talents.

Next was Juliette Haigh, NZ rower and London Olympic bronze medalist with her partner Rebecca. She shared her life and schedule. Juliette told us to take life as it comes, enjoy the fact that you tried your best and it’s not the big things, it’s all the little things. Juliette finished off by saying “Go for the gold!”

After that Josh Iosefo said is original “Brown Brother” speech.

Lastly, and definitely the most inspiring for most of us, was Cam Calkoen. He figured out what his name meant, crooked nose turkey.  Cam has a disability, which makes him even more inspiring. He told us many inspiring words like... build a dream and the dream will build you. When you know where you are going, the world will make way for you. Inspiration is what is all around us.

It was a long day but we had lots of breaks with music, movie clips and games. We all enjoyed it and learnt a lot. This day gave us an idea of the future.

THUNDER AND LIGHTNING!

On Tuesday a big lightning storm struck Auckland city.

It was huge BANG! BOOM!! KAPOW!!

I had lots of fun watching them hit the ground and stay up high.

As time goes past the storm stopped a lot slower than it started.

Water spouts were also reported.

Signs Of Storms

Thunder and lightning has been heard and seen lately now that winter is nearing. The weather has been stormy lately and a lot of rain has been falling. There have also been water spouts, around the harbor and the air port. Soon it will be Winter and the weather will be worse. Some times its a nice day but not all the time. A killer tornado struck America killing A LOT of people. It also hit a school. It was about 40 metres wide. It spun at around 200-300 km per hour. It was very bad.

THUNDER/ LIGHTNING/ WATER SPOUTS

On  Tuesday 21.05.13 there was very dangerous fork lightning and thunder.  At the Auckland airport there were two massive water spouts in the water. Luckily the water spouts did not sweep up to shore and cause any trouble.

Tuesday 21 May 2013

TERRIBLE WEATHER

THE TERRIBLE WEATHER

In USA there were tornados. The news says there were 24 killed and a dozen people badly injured. a lot of people are in hospital. It hit a school and left no... not one wall standing.

Also in NZ there were tornados and water spouts. Luckly none hit the ground. There were huge thunderstorms. It's been a long time since lightning has came. It was around 4:46 yesterday when it started. In the weather , it said the huge cloud was doing a 360 degree so we will be having thunder storms again.

The Mercury-Redstone Rocket

It used to be a space fight rocket. Until lots of rockets passed the Saturn-v rocket started to take over. It was used for the Apollo missions and maybe other things that I don't know. But now we just launch space shuttles to sent people to the international space station. Now they plan to send people to Mars and astroids and research them and I like the idea of making tractor beams. Back to the redstone rockets the capsule had a tiny inside, one man obviously, It can get into orbit and do other stuff. It also had tiny rockets on the bottom of the fuel tank witch are powerful. It has a lot of switched and fuses it even has an gyroscope! and other cameras on the capsule. That all that I can remember learning.

CROSS COUNTRY

On Tuesday the 21 of May a few people from our school went to Mountford park.

Week 3: Room 12's 80 minute writing challenge

On Monday we had 5 students from Room 11 spend the day with us while their teacher was away at Orienteering. These 5 students, Lucy, April, Kaitlyn, Blake and Ben, became the leaders of the five teams that took part in the 80 minute writing challenge. Together with their teams of Room 12 students they had to brainstorm, draft and re-craft a narrative story in just 80 minutes. It was quite the challenge! Read below to see what they came up with...

Room 12's 80 minute writing challenge!!

The haunted campsite!

Orientation:

It was the year 2013. Max, Veronica, Bob, Steve and Hollie were taking a vacation to a campsite in New Zealand.Hollies best friend max has decided to come on a holiday with them since he was really part of the family.

Bob is the Dad of the Smith family. Bob is intelligent and likes to read books that are 300-400 pages long. Bobs favourite colour is blue.He wears a blue t-shirt, red three quarter pants and black pointy dress shoes.MOST of the time Bob is happy and sometimes he is in a very bad mood.He is 42 years old and he has a kidney disease.

Complication:

Lake wood lodge camper van site is far away from home. We had our little white and red camper van on the back of our Holden rodeo.
We left home at 9.00 am and arrived at the camp site at the camp site about 1.00 pm. It looked empty. It was very dark, dull and a little bit spooky. It was 1pm and it was dark it was a little bit odd! As soon as we got there we were all very tired and we decided to have a little sleep.
I heard foot steeps tip toeing across the camper van floor. I rolled around to see what it was but is was just.... my little brother Steve sleep walking.

In between the complication and the climax:
The next morning I woke up to see that Steve was missing he was not in his bed. I ran to mum and dad's room to wake them up and help me find Steve. We tipped the camper van upside down to try to find him but he was nowhere to be seen. I walked outside and found an abandoned tent sitting in the middle of nowhere.

Climax:
Max walks over to the tent. He finds Steve's Converse shoes. He looks around the tent for a little while and he finds human foot prints he follows them down to the river and finds Steve swimming. He tells Steve to go back to the camper van.
Max was helping Steve up from the river when suddenly Max falls in the water and hits his head on a rock and gets knocked out he starts to float down the river. Steve was freaking out because he saw blood in the water. He didnt want to tell his mum or dad what happened so he just said"Max is dead".

Resolution:
The family ran down to the river and saw the blood so they believed Steve. The family decided to end their holiday so they packed up stuff and tried to get out the gate but then they saw the sign. The sign said you have to stay forever the family could not believe it.

15 YEARS LATER....
My family has been missing for 15 years and I am the only one that survived.

Candy Land

As the plane slowly drifts towards America, The wind starts pushing the private plane. Mary-Jane and Jonathan start to freak out and panic.

Mary-Jane also known as MJ has red, wavy hair that is as bright as a rose. Blue eyes like the sea at night. MJ loves animals and education but she dislikes sports and especially running because it's so hard and boring.

While MJ was panicing, the plane was slowly heading toward the water. Over the speaker the pilot yelled "We're about to crash!"

Then suddenly the plane filled up with cold sea water  and MJ started swimming to the nearest island with Jonathan. The two of them couldn't believe their eyes! It was candy land! As they got closer they saw life size gumdrops dancing on the beach made out of sherbet.

MJ and Jonathan ran to the forest made out of peppermint trees and chocolate coconuts. Mj walked over to the trees and picked on one of the coconuts and ate the little piece. She tells Jonathan about the place and they both started eating all of the candy around them.

Jonathan went to the massive chocolate fountain and drank all of the chocolate that he was addicted to the chocolate and wanted more!MJ was at the mountains and ate all the cherries and all the candy she could possibly see. The both ate so much that the ate the island and died of hunger and dehydration.

Banana island

Once upon an island, there lived a monkey called Steve. He longed to be a ninja. He created his own banana boomerangs and nun chucks. He was forever replacing his banana sword. Steve couldn't help himself from eating them. To help him practise, Steve had a very small(but feisty) friend,Mr. Cuddles. He was a mere cat.

That night, Steve and Mr Cuddles were searching for their old friend, sensei tree, He was 6,000,000 years old, deaf, blind, mental but somehow powerful. Later, he found him sleeping. ''Sensei tree! We found you!" Steve screamed.
 ''Oh right,your deaf. LET'S MEDITATE."
Without another word, they are both meditating silently.

The next morning when he woke up. It was a very big storm! Steve ran up Sensei tree and hung on for dear life, literally. The tsunami was growing and rising. Steve ran and grabbed Mr. Cuddles. He saw a giant coconut. He bounced on a spider web and landed safely into the coconut. But  to his surprise, there was coconut milk inside! So they swam to the bottom and found a big trunk. He balanced it up and saw the island long gone. Steve used the trunk to look every-where. When he looked through, there was a big spider butt.''Ah'' he shook the trunk and it plopped into the water.

A few days later, the lady spider returned with an angry look on her face ''Ah! Do not eat me! You are fat enough already! You don't need the calories!'' Steve screamed fearfully.
'' I am PREGNANT!'' The spider shouted.
''My name is Rose. I am truly sorry'' Steve said
''really?'' Rose said hopefully.
''Of course not lady! What the heck do you think this is? Titanic!'' Steve said!
The next thing you know, crabs came, opened up roses stomach and out popped the 8 babies. Roses husband Jack came, and told Steve to cover his eyes. ''Spider marriage is complicated''.

In the end, the coconut crashed into an iceberg. Jack screamed, ''hang on rose!'' And rose shouted back '' it matters if i die, but if you die, i was gonna eat you any way.''

But they were never found. Steve, and Mr. Cuddles found a land of gummy bears. Guess who they found? Sensei tree. But that is another story.

THE CREEPER

It was a dark and misty December night, the last day of the year. The sky was pitch black almost blank but a few stars twinkling. Anna and Jason walked into the haunted movie theatre slowly looking around the small and ancient theatre seeing teared red velvet seats, cobwebs in every corner and blood stains all over the walls.

They sat down and the movie started playing...
Big holes started appearing in the wall and
a gust of wind blew them out of their seats and they started hearing echoes in the distance. "ringa, ringa, rosy. A pocket full of posy. A tissue, a tissue we all fall down." All of a sudden the lights went dim and the doors slammed shut. An old man in a black coat with a knife in his hand grabbed them by the throat and pulled them in one by one. "Ahhhhhhh!" they both screamed.

"Leave us alone" Anna squealed.
"No one leaves my movie alive!" The Creeper replied.
The Creeper started attacking them, chasing them around an old house with a dripping red knife but he didn't get to them quick enough. He slipped on a puddle of sea monkeys and his knife was catapulted into the air. Quickly Anna grabbed the knife and sewered it into the Creepers heart. Suddenly Anna, Jason and the Creeper were transported onto the patch of grass outside the theatre. With his dying breath the Creeper bite into Jason's arm before the he burned into ash. Slowly Jason started to roll around disparately trying to fight back the pain. Anna sprinted all the way home frightened from the series of events that'll forever change her life. Eventually Jason settled down but he started to change into a creature of horror and nightmare. He had become THE CREEPER...

Room 12s 80 minute writing challenge

Past midnight at School

It was a dark, stormy night at Reremoana school. The fog was blocking Lucy's eyesight. The rain was  pouring down on the roof of the school hall. Lucy, Emma and Luke were running around and playing games when lightning struck the roof.

Lucy is a 13 year old, blonde haired, green eyed girl. She enjoys drawing, playing all kinds of kinds of sports, having sleep overs with her friends and much more. Her nicknames are dumb blonde and pineapple lump.

They were playing monopoly when they heard knocking at the door. Emma went to the door to check but a few minutes later she still didn't return, they waited a few minutes when they heard a loud scream, Luke ran outside to find a path of blood leading to room 12. Luke called out Emma's name 20 times but heard no answer in return. Lucy came out to help find Emma.

They found out that Emma was  a zombie when she said "hello friends" then Luke Screamed like a little girl. Lucy slapped him in the face and said "be a man!"

After about a couple of minutes dark figures started coming closer through the fog. Luke and Lucy started backing away but reached a dead end. They started shaking and calling for help but no one answered.

They were in a dark place when the room was lighting up. "The sun!" they screamed. They saw the zombies running for the darkness. All the zombies died but Emma turned back to a human. They all went home wondering if what just happened was real or a dream.

E-asTTle Changes Writing Results!

News From Room12: E-asTTle Changes Writing Results

E-asTTle changes the results for the writing test! D:<  Everyone got a slightly bad mark from -2B-3A. We need to be at 3A by the end of the year but only a few people made it. Most people were in -2B, 2P and 2A.

Everyone had unwanted marks because of this affect even us, so we want to and we hate the new way they mark the test .

The reason our marks went lower with the new way they mark it is because its harder.

Week 11 - Kereru team's Working Bee.

As part of our science rotation this term, when classes visited Mr Fourie they undertook an inquiry into how to improve the school planter boxes. Lots of research and planning went into how this could best be done. At the end of the term, students split into teams to focus on four main aspects; compost bins, worm farms, irrigation and soil quality.
On Wednesday and Thursday we had two working bees where all of that great work was put into place. All of the gardens were moved, the poor soil was taken away, irrigation systems were laid down, the boxes were replaced, new soil was added and some funky class labels were added, (thanks Mrs Notley!) The gardens are looking great now. I can't wait to see how well the new plants will grow!

Week 11 - The Nukes came to rock and to roll!

We had some special visitors this week, The Nukes! A trio of very clever ukulele players. They could strum, they could sing and they could entertain! My favourite song was "Worms". What was yours?

Y6 Technology - Week 11

This week the Year 7 and 8's had their termly technology days. Mrs Notley and I didn't want the Year 6's to miss out so we spent time on Monday and Tuesday learning how to handsew.
Room 12 and 13 students learnt how to do straight, back, zigzag, chain and blanket stitches. They also learnt how to thread a needle and tie a knot.
Once they had mastered these skills they were able to choose an animal to make. It was an eventful few days! But the animals all looked so cute in the end.
